WEDDING DANCE CHOREOGRAPHY WITH GEMINI DANCE STUDIOS

Chris really enjoys the challenge of choreographing wedding and special occasion dances for dancers of all ages and abilities and has many years of experience.

Here she suggests what you need to consider when deciding on your special dance :

1. Venue
What size is the floor you are planning on using? Please take in to consideration if there will be people standing around the floor as this will limit the space you have to dance. Why is this important? If you have a very constrained space, then you are limited to the non-travelling dances eg. Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive/Rock & Roll, Argentine Tango, Salsa/Mambo.
The ballroom dances need quiet a bit of room to look good.

2. Music
For most people this is the first thing they think about, but this really needs to be selected after you know how much room you have. Please bear in mind that it is possible that your chosen track may be too slow for you to dance with control, especially if you are a beginner. I always suggest that you have a few possibilities to discuss with your teacher.

3. Time
When is your wedding? So many couples spend months planning the perfect occasion and then leave learning that special dance until the last minute. The more time you allow yourselves the more relaxed you will be on the big day. It is better to learn it early then you just need to polish nearer the time. Try to allow yourselves and your teacher at least 4 months, longer if your event is around the summer, Easter or Christmas as your teacher may have time off at these times.

4. The Dress
The length and style of your outfit can make a difference to the choreography. Can you move backwards without standing on your skirt? If your dress has a train and it needs to be attached to your wrist, this can make underarm turns difficult.

5. Shoes
Men – If your shoes are long in the front, and go way past your toes, there is more chance of you standing on your partner. Rubber soled shoes are not a good idea as you need to be able to glide across the floor – rubber soles will stick to the floor.
Ladies – You need to start to get used to dancing in your wedding shoes as soon as possible, but if you are afraid that your partner may mark them, then you should wear a pair of a similar style and height initially. As with your partner, you need to be able to glide across the floor and not stick, therefore rubber soles are not advisable. You should avoid slingback shoes as they are not stable enough for dancing.
